Can I have electric underfloor heating with an engineered wooden floor?

Under Floor Heating

One of the most frequently asked questions we get when people are researching a new wooden floor is “can I have electric underfloor heating when I fit an engineered wooden floor?”

Of course when you’re planning or fitting a new wooden floor it’s a great time to consider your options around heating the room or space. Many people now prefer to opt for underfloor heating because it not only feels luxurious to walk on, but provides a more comfortable and even temperature throughout the room than more traditional convection heating methods, from radiators for example.

How does underfloor heating work?

Underfloor heating is really an ancient technology. The basic principle dates back at least as far as the Romans who understood a heated solid floor would conduct and then release waves of heat that would provide an even and consistent warmth. Today we call this radiant heating or radiant underfloor heating and it works on the principle of using the heat waves from the floor to warm or heat the objects or people who are in the room.

As you can imagine, underfloor heating is considerably more efficient than a radiator which works on the principle of heating the air in room. So when you open a window or door for example all the warm air escapes and of course given that warm air rises you’ll often find people complain of cold feet in a room heated by a radiator.

Electric Underfloor heating

At 1926 Trading we recommend the EcoFilmSet from Flexel for either engineered wooden floors or laminate floors. Quick and easy to install, the EcoFilmSet has no moving parts and as a result is maintenance free. Room temperature is controlled from a wall mounted thermostat.

What about the economy of electric underfloor heating?

The whole surface area of the floor radiates heat, that means that you get a much more even heat distribution throughout the room than you would with alternative heating methods. In real terms, this means that you could set the room temperature as much as 2 to 3 degrees lower than you would using radiators and still feel just as warm. As a result as long as the engineered wooden floor or laminate is well insulated, you could see up to a 10% saving over conventional convector heating options.
