Barlinek and the Enviroment

Barlinek and the Enviroment

BARLINEK are one of the most modern and at the same time environment friendly manufacturing companies in Europe. It owes its position to investment in new technologies, machines, production plant, warehouses and ecological solutions. Barlineks nature preservation policy is one of the highest in the industry and they are one of the largest producers capable of manufacturing 11.5 million metres of multi layered wood flooring a year.

Barlinek produces its own thermal energy by means of biomass combustion (sawdust, bark and the other wood waste generated in the production of Barlinek floorboards). This way the company avoids the emission of destructive and excessive amounts of CO2.

Thanks to this and Barlinek's replanting program of 1 tree for 1 pack of flooring sold, they actually contribute to a reduction in global climate change, to date over 6.5 million trees have been planted.

Barlinek is the only producer in Europe that brings together the whole production process in one place. This guarantees complete control over each stage of processing the wood as well as economical use of the material. Top quality wood is used for the production of Barlinek floorboards, veneer and skirting boards, and the lower grade wood for the production of ecological bio fuel, pellets. Thermal energy for heating and technological processes is obtained from bark and waste. Post-production sawdust is used for pellet production. Barlinek produce floorboards, veneer and skirting-boards from the most precious part of the log. Bark is sold as a decorative element for the garden or, together with waste, is used to make biomass.

Barlinek wood flooring is made of natural wood. All components used in the production comply with the highest standards of safety for people and the natural environment. This is testified by the PZH (National Institute of Hygiene) certificate obtained by Barlinek. Barlinek wood flooring can be easily installed in bedrooms, children rooms or playschools.

Barlinek Plank Construction

1. The five layers of UV-cured acrylic finish are factory-applied and ready to be walked on as soon as the floor is installed.
2. The hardwood top layer is available in many different wood species and patterns.
3. A supporting layer guarantees strength and dimensional stability.
4. Barlinek products have a backing of pine or spruce, giving added dimensional stability to these floors, which can be installed using the floating method.

Barclick Jointing System

The benefits of the BARCLICK system: Simple, quick and clean installation without adhesive, Strong and durable joint between individual elements of the floor, Immediate ready-to-use floor right after installation, Easy to dismantle and reassembly if necessary (moving home, general redecoration etc.)
Barlinek floorboard is distinguishable by its BARCLICK joint solution, developed by the technical staff of Barlinek. Work on the locks construction and implementation took several years. The research covered different kinds of wood (native as well as exotic) and was carried out at a special laboratory which enabled simulation of the variable microclimate conditions of a room adapted to natural use conditions in different parts of the world. Barlinek Barclick joint

Barlinek Floor Styles

Barlinek1 Strip
The surface of the board is sawn in one piece, this emphasises the feeling of nature and will show the full character of the species chosen. Knots and variations in colour clearly demonstrate that this is a unique flooring complete with all the variety in the grain that only 1-strip can provide. Barlinek 1-strip range includes a selection of floors with less variation in colour and with minimal knots or no knots. Barlinek 1-strip floors are ideal for large rooms where the dimension of the boards is in keeping with the overall space. Barlinek 1 strip engineered wood flooring

Barlinek 3 Strip
With 3-strip floors the wear layer is three strips wide. The strips have different lengths and are positioned randomly, this creates a floor with an individual character. They are also graded into several varieties, enabling different floors to have a livelier or more tranquil feel. Barlinek 3-strip floors, offer a wide range of decorating opportunities. Barlinek 3 strip engineered wood flooring

Nature
Wood in all its glory, with knots in different sizes. The pattern of the rings beautifully depicts the annual growth of the tree and shows a wide palette of colours. The perfect completion for light and natural interiors.

Barlinek Surface Treatment

Varnishing
In varnishing Barlinek floorboards, they apply multiple layers of UV hardened acrylic varnish. The basic range of Barlinek floorboards is covered with semi-matt varnish (the reflection coefficient is 20s on the Gardner scale). High-gloss floors are also available, finished with varnish with a reflection coefficient of 95s on the Gardner scale or a new-generation varnish with increased resistance to wear and tear and mechanical damage. The most important benefits of UV hardened acrylic varnish layers are: high aesthetic values and working properties; lack of harmful substances; high flexibility of the surface; resistance to ageing; ease of maintenance and keeping clean; no negative influence on working conditions and natural environment.
Oiling
Ecological oil does not create any additional layer on the surface of the floor, but gets into the wood and impregnates it. This process brings out the natural structure and tree-rings in the surface. The oil can tint in different colours, for example to produce the effect of a whitewashed floor. Oiled Barlinek floorboards acquire the more unique look of a stylish wooden floor with time.
Brushing
Brushing the surface highlights the natural structure of the grain creating additional texture. Kahrs can vary the effect depending on the species, and type of bristle. Brushing is usually accompanied by other surface treatments such as bevelling the edges and applying a coloured stain or glaze.
Bevelled edges
Bevelling the edges on 1-strip floor boards accentuates each individual plank. This year we are introducing several floors with edges that are bevelled to varying degrees. Everything from floors with micro-bevelling (a slight accentuation of the edge using sandpaper) to more dramatic, stronger bevels on all edges that give the floor a more rustic and robust look.

Questions & Answers

Q) I enter a shop can see engineered wood floors on the right and laminated flooring on the left. At first sight, there is no difference between them, perhaps apart from the price... A) The difference between a laminate and a three-layer engineered wood floor is crucial. It’s as if you compared natural milk with milk powder. In a nutshell, a laminate is an artificial article made of processed shavings and a layer of paper pressed over it whereas a engineered wood floor, such as the Barlinek engineered flooring, is a natural wood product.

Q) Why are wooden floors so healthy?
A) An experienced floor installer could talk about the advantages of wood for hours. Wood breathes and regulates the microclimate of houses and flats. It absorbs humidity and gives it back when the air gets drier. Furthermore, it ionizes the air, does not pick up static and does not attract dust. This is very important, especially for those susceptible to allergies. Finally, wooden floors guarantee thermal insulation of a room, which is felt as a warm floor, and acoustic insulation – deadened noises.

Q) The three layer engineered natural wooden floors mentioned – what makes them stand out?
A) Multilayer floors are great because of, among many things, the high resistance to deformation. The special construction of Barlinek wood flooring and the snap joint that is used allow wood to behave naturally (shrink and swell). This reduces the appearance of spoiling cracks, so typical in traditional parquets. Barlinek floorboards, thanks to these properties and their optimal thickness, can be installed on under-floor heating. Easy, quick and clean installation is another advantage. You can install the floorboards on your own, saving time and money that you would pay if you hired a specialist. Barlinek wood floors are varnished during the manufacturing process, so you do not need to do it at home. Right after installation, the room can be furnished and the decorating is done.

Q) We have decided to take Barlinek floorboards. Now we need to choose a specific pattern and a type of finish. What is more important – the kind of wood or varnish?
A) Both are equally important. The choice of wood not only determines the aesthetic values, but also the durability. Each kind has specific technical parameters. In the case of wood flooring, the most important is indent resistance and resistance to thermal and air humidity changes. This is why it is worth paying attention to the character of the room – for high traffic rooms, such as living rooms, floorboards made of harder wood are recommended; for example, Beech, Oak, Ash or Hornbeam. Exotic wood floorboard will do as well. Cheaper kinds with lower parameters, such as Maple, Birch or Alder – are good enough to work as floors in bedrooms. Places and rooms that are used intensively, such as halls, corridors or stairs, are worth investing in some very hard exotic wood. The most recommended in this case are: Tali, Badi, Jatoba and Merbau.

Q) What’s the function of varnish and what features does the new generation of varnishes have?
A) Varnish does not make the floor harder but it protects it from dirt and wear and tear. Recently, wood flooring with a new generation varnish finish have become available on the market, with a higher scratch and even mechanical damage resistance. Owing to greater elasticity, the varnish layer does not crack (for example when we drop an object on it) and still protects the wood.

Q) Which should I choose: a floorboard with an oil or varnish finish?
A) Well, it depends on your preference. The main difference between them is that oil gets into the structure of the wood, protecting it from wear and tear and damage, at the same time exposing the beauty and naturalness of this material. Tiny micro scratches, appearing especially in the initial period of use, these are less visible in the case of an oiled floor. It is also easier to level these tiny damages on your own using Barlinek Protektor Natura remedial oil, available from 1926 Wood Flooring. When it comes to varnish, Barlinek wood flooring is covered with as many as seven layers of UV hardened varnish, which forms a very good protection against wear and tear, scratches and other damage.

Q) A few years ago we were installing a parquet floor at my mother’s. I can remember the specific smell of varnish still lingered even a week after varnishing. During this period, our mother stayed with us because her allergy to different paints and varnish meant she couldn’t stay at home. Is it the same with Barlinek wood flooring finished at manufacturing? Is it possible to smell varnish?
A) Both oil and varnish are completely safe. They do not contain harmful substances. No dust or smells rise into the air in the house. They can be safely installed in children’s and allergy sufferers’ rooms. Health safety is guaranteed by the PZH (National Institute of Hygiene) certificate.

Q) So I already know what floorboard to choose. You said it is possible to install the Barlinek floorboards on my own, but how? How do I start? I’ve never done this before.
A) There’s always a first time (smile). Floating floor installation is always easy. First of all, carefully read the installation instructions attached to each floorboard pack. Then, after getting the floorboards home, you need to let them acclimatize for at least 48 hours. Just leave the unpacked floorboards in a horizontal position in the room where the floor is to be installed.

Q) Is installing the floorboard the same in the case of under-floor heating?
A) Not really. In the case of installation on under- floor heating, I would recommend gluing the floorboards to the ground. Barlinek floorboards have a bottom layer with the proper thickness, so it does not cause any problems. For heated floors I would recommend low shrinkage and relaxation factor woods, such as Oak. Before starting the installation, remember to preheat the floor in accordance with Barlinek instructions. When it comes to gluing down a floor, we would recommend that you use the services of a qualified installer.
An alternative installation would be to install the floor as a floated floor and use Heatflow underlay. Heatflow is a low tog underlay that gives good noise absorbing properties. Additional information on Heatflow underlay can be obtained from 1926 Wood Flooring.
